In January 2026, Mercari made one of the biggest fee changes in the reselling world: they completely eliminated the 2.9% + $0.50 payment processing fee for sellers. Here's what that means for your bottom line.
Before January 2026, every Mercari sale hit sellers with two fees: the 10% marketplace fee and a separate 2.9% + $0.50 payment processing fee. Now the processing fee is gone entirely. The 10% marketplace fee is the only fee sellers pay.
Buyers now pay a separate 3.6% protection fee on their end β but that's their cost, not yours.
Here's a real example β a $50 item with $5 shipping ($55 total):
Before (2024β2025):
Marketplace fee (10%): $55 Γ 0.10 = $5.50
Processing fee: $55 Γ 0.029 + $0.50 = $2.10
Total fees: $7.60 | Payout: $47.40
After (Jan 2026):
Marketplace fee (10%): $55 Γ 0.10 = $5.50
Processing fee: $0.00
Total fees: $5.50 | Payout: $49.50
That's $2.10 more in your pocket per sale. On 100 sales a month at this price point, that's an extra $210/month.
In 2024, Mercari experimented with a zero-fee model to compete with Depop and Vinted. It didn't last β the 10% marketplace fee came back in early 2026. But the silver lining is they dropped the processing fee permanently. Whether that sticks long-term remains to be seen, but for now, sellers are benefiting.
At a flat 10%, Mercari is now one of the more affordable major platforms:
