How to Save on Shipping Costs as a Reseller in 2026

April 6, 2026 Β· 6 min read

You obsess over marketplace fees β€” but are you paying attention to shipping? Most resellers lose 10–20% of their margin to shipping costs. Here's how to cut that down significantly.

USPS Services Ranked by Cost

USPS is the go-to carrier for most resellers. Here's how the main services compare:

  • USPS First Class Mail: The cheapest option for lightweight items under 15.99 oz. Typically $3–$5. Best for small clothing, accessories, jewelry.
  • USPS Ground Advantage: Replaced old Retail Ground and First Class Package for items over 1 lb. Best value for most packages β€” usually $5–$10 for standard sizes. Delivery in 2–5 business days.
  • USPS Priority Mail: Premium service with 1–3 day delivery. More expensive ($8–$15+) but includes free flat rate boxes and $100 insurance. Use when speed matters or items are heavy.

Commercial vs Retail Rates

This is the single biggest savings most sellers miss. When you buy a label at the post office window, you pay retail rates. When you print labels through a service like Pirate Ship, eBay, or Mercari, you get Commercial or Commercial Plus pricing.

The difference is typically 15–25% cheaper. On a Priority Mail label that costs $12.80 at the window, you might pay $9.50–$10.50 through Pirate Ship. Over 100 shipments a month, that's $200–$300 in savings.

Pirate Ship is the most popular third-party label service for resellers β€” it's free to use and gives you USPS Commercial Plus rates (the same rates big retailers get).

Flat Rate Boxes: When They Save Money

USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes charge one price regardless of weight (up to 70 lbs). They're great for heavy, small items β€” but terrible for light items.

  • Use flat rate when: Your item is heavy but fits in a small box. A 5 lb item in a Small Flat Rate Box ($10.40 commercial) is cheaper than paying by weight.
  • Skip flat rate when: Your item is light. A 1 lb t-shirt in a flat rate box costs $10.40 β€” the same shirt via Ground Advantage costs $5–$6.

Always compare both options before choosing. The free Flat Rate boxes from USPS are convenient, but convenience isn't always cheaper.

Weight Accuracy Matters

If you underpay for a shipping label, the carrier will charge a correction fee. Mercari is particularly strict β€” they charge an 8% shipping correction fee if the actual weight exceeds what you selected when listing.

Invest in a kitchen scale or postal scale ($15–$25 on Amazon). Weigh every package including packaging materials. Round up, not down. The cost of a correction fee on a $30 item ($2.40 on Mercari) is far more than the extra ounce would have cost on the label.

Platform-Specific Shipping Tips

  • Poshmark: Flat $8.27 USPS Priority Mail label (buyer pays, up to 5 lbs). Great for bundles β€” stuff multiple items in one shipment to maximize value.
  • eBay: Offers discounted shipping labels through Managed Payments. You get Commercial Plus rates automatically. eBay also offers a shipping calculator widget for listings so buyers see real-time costs.
  • Mercari: Pre-negotiated USPS rates at checkout. Generally competitive, but weigh accurately to avoid that 8% correction fee.
  • StockX & GOAT: Both include prepaid shipping labels. StockX charges a flat $5 shipping fee deducted from your payout.

The Free Shipping Strategy

Listings with "free shipping" get significantly more visibility on most platforms. eBay's algorithm favors free shipping listings. Mercari shows a "free shipping" badge. Buyers psychologically prefer it.

The trick: bake the shipping cost into your item price. If your item costs $25 to ship and you want $50 for it, list at $75 with free shipping instead of $50 + $25 shipping. The total is the same, but the listing performs better.

Just be aware: on Poshmark and Mercari, marketplace fees are calculated on the total sale price β€” so folding shipping into the price means you pay a higher commission. Run the numbers in FeePilot to see if the visibility boost outweighs the extra fee.
