Listing Fees

Mercari does not charge any listing fees. You can list as many items as you want at no cost — fees are only charged when an item actually sells.

• No insertion fees — completely free to list
• No listing upgrade fees — all listing features are included
• New account cap: new sellers may start with a 100-listing limit that increases by 100 for each completed sale
• Listings expire after a period of inactivity but can be relisted for free

Selling (Transaction) Fee

Mercari's primary fee is a flat 10% selling fee on the total sale amount.

• 10% of the total sale amount including item price + buyer-paid shipping
• If the buyer pays shipping, the 10% applies to the combined total (item + shipping)
• If the seller offers free shipping, the 10% applies only to the item price — but the seller absorbs the full shipping cost separately
• There is no minimum or maximum fee cap — it's always a flat 10%
• No category-specific rates — every category pays the same 10%

Payment Processing Fees

As of January 2026, Mercari has eliminated payment processing fees for sellers.

• Previously: sellers paid 2.9% + $0.50 per transaction on top of the 10% selling fee
• Now: payment processing is absorbed by Mercari — sellers only pay the flat 10%
• Buyer protection fee: buyers still pay a 3.6% fee, but this does not come out of the seller's payout

This is a significant improvement for sellers — under the old structure, total fees were effectively ~13.4% on a typical sale. Now it's a clean 10%.

Shipping Fees

Sellers choose between buyer-paid shipping or offering free shipping (at their own cost).

• Buyer-paid shipping: buyer covers the label cost; the 10% selling fee applies to the total including shipping
• Free shipping (seller-paid): seller absorbs shipping cost; 10% fee applies only to item price
• Mercari offers prepaid shipping labels through USPS, UPS, and FedEx at discounted rates
• Shipping correction fee: if a seller underpays for a label (wrong weight or dimensions), Mercari charges an 8% correction fee on the adjusted shipping price — plus the difference in shipping cost
• Sellers can also use their own shipping labels and input tracking manually

Payout Fees

• Direct deposit: free — funds arrive in 2–5 business days
• Instant Pay: $3 per payout for immediate access to your funds (deposited to debit card within minutes)
• Failed deposit fee: $2 penalty if a direct deposit fails due to incorrect bank information
• Mercari balance can also be used to purchase items on the platform at no cost

Returns and Refunds

• Buyers have 72 hours after delivery to inspect the item and file a return request
• If the buyer doesn't rate within 72 hours, the transaction auto-completes and the seller is paid
• If a return is approved, sellers may need to cover return shipping costs
• The 10% selling fee is typically not refunded on returned items — this makes returns particularly costly for sellers
• Mercari mediates disputes between buyers and sellers through their support team

Penalties

• Shipping correction fee: 8% surcharge if the seller underpays for a shipping label (wrong weight/dimensions)
• Failed deposit fee: $2 if a direct deposit is returned due to incorrect bank details
• Account restrictions: repeated cancellations, late shipments, or policy violations can result in listing limits or account suspension
• No seller rating penalties on fees — unlike eBay, Mercari doesn't increase the fee percentage based on seller performance metrics

Here's a worked example — a Nike Hoodie listed at $50.00 with $5.00 buyer-paid shipping:

Under the old fee structure (before Jan 2026), the same sale would have cost $5.50 + $2.10 (2.9% + $0.50) = $7.60 in fees. The new structure saves sellers ~$2 per transaction.

Recent Changes (2024–2026)

• January 2026: Payment processing fee (2.9% + $0.50) eliminated for sellers — total seller fees dropped from ~13.4% to a flat 10%
• Early 2026: 10% selling fee reinstated after a brief zero-fee seller experiment in late 2024 that attracted new users but proved unsustainable
