Shopify Fees Guide 2026 — Own Store vs Marketplace Comparison

Last updated: April 2026

Shopify is not a marketplace — it's a platform for building your own online store. We include it in FeePilot as a baseline comparison so you can see exactly what you'd pay selling on your own site vs. listing on eBay, Amazon, Etsy, or any other marketplace.

Why Shopify Is in FeePilot

Every reseller eventually asks: "Am I giving too much to marketplaces? Should I sell on my own site?" Shopify answers that question with data. When you see Shopify's ~3% total fees next to eBay's ~14% or Poshmark's 20%, the difference is stark — but so is the tradeoff.

Fee Structure

  • Marketplace commission: 0% — you own your store
  • Listing fees: None
  • Payment processing: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (Basic plan, Shopify Payments)
  • Monthly subscription: $39-$399/mo (not included in per-item calc)

Shopify Plan Comparison

PlanMonthly CostCard Rate~$100 Fee
Basic$39/mo2.9% + $0.30$3.20
Shopify$105/mo2.6% + $0.30$2.90
Advanced$399/mo2.15% + $0.30$2.45

FeePilot uses the Basic plan rate (2.9% + $0.30) in the calculator. The monthly subscription is not included in per-item calculations.

Fee Calculation Example

A $100 item sold on your Shopify store vs. marketplaces:

Shopify (Basic):

Marketplace fee: $0.00

Processing (2.9% + $0.30): $3.20

Total fees: $3.20 (3.2%)

Compare to marketplaces:

eBay: ~$14.00 (14%)

Amazon FBA: ~$15.00+ (15%+ with fulfillment)

Poshmark: $20.00 (20%)

Etsy: ~$10.00 (10%)

Mercari: $10.00 (10%)

On a $100 item, Shopify saves you $6.80-$16.80 per sale compared to marketplaces. But remember: you need to drive every buyer to your store yourself.

The Tradeoff: Fees vs Traffic

Marketplace fees buy you something valuable: access to millions of active buyers. When you sell on eBay, Amazon, or Etsy, buyers are already searching for products. On Shopify, you start with zero visitors and must invest in customer acquisition.

When Shopify Makes Sense

  • High-margin products where marketplace commissions cut too deep
  • Existing audience — social media following, email list, or brand recognition
  • Repeat customers — no commission on returning buyers
  • High volume — subscription cost amortized across many sales
  • Brand building — custom store experience and direct customer relationships

When Marketplaces Win

  • Low volume — the $39/mo subscription eats into thin margins
  • No existing audience — marketplace discovery brings buyers you'd never reach
  • Testing new products — validate demand before investing in your own store
  • Impulse categories — thrift finds, vintage items, sneakers work better with marketplace audiences

Subscription Break-Even Math

At $39/month (Basic plan), you need enough fee savings to cover the subscription. For a $100 item where you'd save ~$10.80 vs eBay:

  • 4 sales/month at $100 → subscription pays for itself
  • 8 sales/month at $50 → break-even
  • 20 sales/month at $20 → break-even (tight at lower prices)

Many sellers use both: Shopify for their brand store + marketplaces for additional reach. Cross-listing maximizes both channels.

Third-Party Payment Processors

If you don't use Shopify Payments (their built-in processor), Shopify charges an additional 2% transaction fee on top of your processor's fees. This makes third-party processors significantly more expensive. Shopify Payments is available in most countries and is strongly recommended.
