eBay Seller Guide

April 2026 Β· 8 min read

Why eBay?

Largest audience, widest category range, auction + fixed price options. eBay is the original online marketplace and it's still one of the best for reaching buyers.

  • Best for: Electronics, collectibles, vintage, auto parts, specialty items
  • Not ideal for: Fast fashion (better on Depop/Poshmark)

Getting Started on eBay

Create an account and set up Managed Payments (now mandatory β€” no more PayPal direct). You get 250 free listings per month. Start with fixed-price Buy It Now listings β€” auctions are risky for beginners because you might sell below your floor price.

Writing Listings That Sell

Title is everything for search. Use all 80 characters. Include: brand, model, size, color, condition, key specs. Use Item Specifics fields β€” eBay's search algorithm relies heavily on them.

Good: "Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen USB-C β€” Like New, Box Included"
Bad: "AirPods for sale"

Photography Tips for eBay

White background is preferred for electronics and new items. Stock photos are allowed for new-in-box items. eBay gives you 12 photo slots β€” use them all. Your first photo is the thumbnail in search results, so make it count.

Pricing Strategy on eBay

Check "Sold Items" (filter in search) for real market prices. Use Best Offer to let buyers negotiate without lowering your listed price. Watch for eBay seller promotions like markdown manager and volume pricing.

Run your prices through FeePilot first β€” eBay's 13.6% + $0.40 per-order fee adds up fast.

Earning Top Rated Plus

Requirements:

  • 100+ transactions per year
  • <0.5% defect rate
  • <3% late shipment rate

Benefits:

  • 10% discount on final value fees
  • Top Rated Plus badge (builds buyer trust)
  • Priority in search results

This is the single best way to reduce eBay fees long-term.

Promoted Listings β€” Worth It?

eBay's ad system charges 2–20% on top of your fees. Since January 2026, the attribution window expanded β€” you pay the ad fee if ANYONE clicks your promoted listing and ANYONE buys within 30 days.

  • Start at 2–3% ad rate
  • Test for 2 weeks, compare sell-through with and without
  • For competitive categories (clothing, electronics), low-rate promotion can help
  • For niche items, often unnecessary

Store Subscriptions

Worth it at volume. Basic Store ($27.95/mo) gives 1,000 free listings + lower fees. Break-even is roughly 50+ sales per month. Below that, stick with the free tier.

Common eBay Mistakes

  • Listing in wrong category β€” can trigger higher fees
  • Not filling Item Specifics β€” kills search visibility
  • Shipping too slow β€” lose Top Rated status
  • Ignoring return requests β€” defects tank your account
