Why Etsy?

The go-to marketplace for handmade, vintage (20+ years old), and craft supplies. Built-in audience of buyers who value unique, creative products.

  • Best for: Handmade goods, custom items, digital downloads, vintage clothing/decor, craft supplies
  • Not for: Mass-produced items, general resale

Getting Started

Create a shop (free), choose a memorable shop name, write a shop description that tells your story. Set up Etsy Payments (required). Upload a shop icon and banner. Complete your About section β€” Etsy buyers care about the maker's story.

Understanding Etsy's Fee Stack

This is where Etsy gets tricky. You pay multiple fees on every sale:

  • $0.20 listing fee β€” per item, renews every 4 months or after each sale
  • 6.5% transaction fee β€” on total (item + shipping)
  • 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee
  • 12–15% Offsite Ads fee β€” if triggered (see below)

These stack. On a $40 item with $5 shipping, your total fees can be $5–8+ depending on whether Offsite Ads triggered. Always run the numbers through FeePilot. See the full Etsy fee breakdown.

Etsy SEO β€” How to Get Found

Etsy search is its own algorithm. Here's how to rank:

  • Titles: Use all 140 characters. Front-load the most important keywords.
  • Tags: Use all 13 tags. Use long-tail phrases ("boho macrame wall hanging" not just "wall hanging").
  • Categories: Choose the most specific category available.
  • Attributes: Fill in every attribute (color, size, material).

Etsy rewards relevance + recency + conversion rate.

Photography on Etsy

Etsy is a visual platform. Lifestyle photos (item in use or in context) outperform plain product shots. Show scale (hand holding item, item on table). First photo should be your most eye-catching lifestyle shot. Etsy allows 10 photos + a video β€” use them all.

Pricing for Profit on Etsy

Don't forget the fee stack. A $25 item might seem profitable until you realize $0.20 + $1.63 + $1.00 = $2.83 in fees before shipping.

For handmade items, value your time. If it takes 2 hours to make and you sell for $30 minus $5 fees minus $8 materials, you're earning $8.50/hour. Price to pay yourself fairly. See our pricing strategy guide.

Offsite Ads β€” The Fee You Can't Always Avoid

Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, and other sites. If someone clicks that ad and buys within 30 days, you pay 12–15% of the sale on top of all other fees.

  • Under $10K/year: You can opt out in Shop Manager β†’ Marketing β†’ Offsite Ads
  • Over $10K/year: Mandatory, but the rate drops to 12%

If you're eligible to opt out and your margins are thin, opt out.

Digital Downloads

Etsy's secret weapon for passive income. Create once, sell unlimited times. No shipping, no inventory, no materials cost. Popular categories:

  • Printable art
  • Planner templates
  • SVG files
  • Wedding invitations

Same fees apply but no shipping cost = better margins.

Reviews Are Everything

Respond to every message promptly. Ship on time or early. Include a handwritten thank-you note. If something goes wrong, fix it before the buyer leaves a review. A 4.8+ star rating is the trust threshold.

Common Etsy Mistakes

  • Not accounting for the fee stack β€” the biggest one
  • Poor SEO/tags β€” invisible listings don't sell
  • Not opting out of Offsite Ads β€” if eligible
  • Pricing too low for handmade items β€” pay yourself for your time
  • Not renewing listings regularly β€” freshness matters for search
