Product Photography for Online Sellers

Why Photos Matter More Than Anything

Your photos are your storefront. Buyers can't touch or try the item β€” they're buying based on what they see. Bad photos = slow sales, even if the item and price are great. Good photos = faster sales at higher prices.

You Don't Need Expensive Equipment

A smartphone made in the last 3–4 years is all you need. No DSLR required.

  • Clean your lens (seriously β€” this is the #1 fix)
  • Use the rear camera, not the selfie camera
  • Turn off flash β€” always

Lighting Is Everything

Natural light is free and the best option. Shoot near a large window during daytime. Overcast days give soft, even light (no harsh shadows). If natural light isn't available, a $20 ring light or desk lamp with a white diffuser works. Avoid overhead fluorescent lighting β€” it makes everything look yellow/green.

Backgrounds

Clean, uncluttered backgrounds. White or light gray is safest for most items.

  • Flat lays (clothing): White sheet, poster board, or clean floor
  • Electronics/goods: White foam board propped up as a backdrop
  • Avoid: Carpet, messy desks, beds with wrinkled sheets

Exception: Depop and Etsy buyers like lifestyle/styled photos β€” but the item should still be the clear focus.

Angles and What to Shoot

Front, back, sides, top, bottom β€” cover all angles. Close-ups of:

  • Tags/labels (proves authenticity)
  • Flaws/wear (builds trust)
  • Unique details (stitching, hardware, texture)

Minimum 4–6 photos per listing. Most platforms allow 8–12 β€” use them all. First photo is your thumbnail in search results β€” make it the best one.

Platform-Specific Tips

  • eBay: Clean product shots on white background work best. Stock photos allowed for new-in-box items. Fill all 12 slots.
  • Poshmark: Flat lays are the norm. Styled/modeled photos get more engagement. Cover photo should be clean and eye-catching.
  • Etsy: Lifestyle photos outperform plain product shots. Show the item in use or in context. Buyers want to imagine it in their home/life.
  • Depop: Casual, authentic aesthetic. Mirror selfies wearing the item are common and effective. Trendy styling matters.
  • Mercari: Clean and clear wins. First photo should show the complete item. Include photos of any accessories/extras included.

Common Photo Mistakes

  • Dark/underlit photos β€” fix: move near a window
  • Blurry shots β€” fix: wipe lens, hold steady or prop phone
  • Cluttered backgrounds β€” fix: clear the area or use a backdrop
  • Not showing flaws β€” fix: always photograph damage (prevents returns)
  • Too few photos β€” fix: take 8–12, upload all of them
  • Using filters β€” fix: don't β€” buyers want accurate colors

Quick Setup (5 Minutes)

Find a window with good light. Lay a white sheet or poster board on a table or floor. Place item in center. Take 6–10 photos from different angles. Review for clarity and lighting. Upload. Done.
