Mercari Seller Guide

April 2026 Β· 7 min read

Why Mercari?

Simple, beginner-friendly, and works for almost any category. The 10% flat fee (no payment processing fee since Jan 2026) makes the math easy. Good "starter platform" for new sellers.

  • Best for: General items, electronics, clothing, home goods

Getting Started

Download the app, create an account, verify your identity (required for payouts). New accounts start with a 100-listing cap that increases by 100 with each sale. Don't let the cap discourage you β€” it rises fast.

Creating Great Listings

Mercari buyers browse casually β€” your photos and title need to grab attention. Use all 12 photo slots. First photo should show the full item clearly.

  • Title: Include brand, item name, size, condition
  • Description: Be honest about flaws. Include measurements for clothing
  • Mention "smoke-free home" if applicable β€” buyers care about this

Pricing on Mercari

Mercari buyers expect deals. Price 10–20% below eBay sold comps. Use Smart Pricing to auto-drop price over time β€” set a floor price you're comfortable with.

Mercari's 10% fee means a $50 sale nets you $45. Compare that to other platforms with FeePilot before listing.

Shipping Strategy

Mercari offers prepaid labels ($4.99–$22.99 by weight) or you can ship on your own. Weigh accurately β€” if your package is heavier than the label you bought, Mercari charges an 8% correction fee on the adjusted shipping price.

  • For items over 1 lb, compare Mercari labels vs Pirate Ship USPS rates
  • Often Pirate Ship is cheaper for heavier items
  • Free shipping boosts visibility but you eat the cost β€” read our free shipping guide

Getting Your First Sales

  • Share your listings to social media
  • Price competitively (slightly below market)
  • Respond to messages quickly
  • Offer bundles β€” buyers save on shipping, you move more inventory
  • Like other sellers' items β€” Mercari's algorithm notices engagement

Instant Pay vs Standard

Standard direct deposit is free (1–5 business days). Instant Pay costs $3 per payout. Unless you need cash immediately, always use standard. That $3 fee eats into small sales β€” on a $20 item, it's 15% of your profit.

Mercari's Fee Changes

In 2024, Mercari briefly tried zero seller fees. In early 2026, the 10% came back but they dropped the 2.9% + $0.50 processing fee. Net result: sellers pay less now than in 2024. Read more: Mercari Drops Processing Fees (2026).

Common Mercari Mistakes

  • Underestimating shipping weight β€” triggers the correction fee
  • Using Instant Pay on small sales β€” $3 fee kills your margin
  • Not relisting stale items β€” refreshing visibility matters
  • Ignoring lowball offers β€” counter instead of ignoring
